U OF H PROFESSOR UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ALLEGEDLY GIVING STUDENTS MARIJUANA!

Students: Professor Gave Us Pot During Trip: MyFoxHOUSTON.com

The university released this statement in response to the allegations:

Students in the program take up to six credit hours of African American Studies courses that include lectures at the University of Ghana at Legon, University of Cape Coast and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi. This is part of our ongoing mission to embrace knowledge of African life on the continent and throughout the Diaspora.

Borrowing critical insights from scholar-activists such as Marcus Garvey and Zora N. Hurston, AAS views international travel as an imperative tool for examining the African experience from a systemic perspective. As such, student participation in the study abroad program provides a key measure of the programs strength in introducing students to advanced research opportunities and original sources within the discipline. In addition to conducting field research and oral histories, student participants in the study abroad program receive instruction and gain awareness of the everyday concerns and political economy of ordinary Ghanaian citizens.

To ensure the safety and welfare of these student participants, and of all students involved in university-sponsored events, the university has in place strong policies regarding drug use, sexual harassment and Title IX.

One of the students in the program has come forward with allegations of improper conduct regarding the Ghana trip in 2010. We are actively and aggressively investigating these allegations. The university takes these kinds of allegations very seriously, as the safety and welfare of our students always is our primary concern. We have begun interviewing everyone involved to determine the facts.

Because of the concerns that have been raised, we will be assigning a different chaperone to accompany the students on this years trip.

We will have no further comment while the investigation is ongoing.

HAS IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN NEW YORK? A MAID AND PROMINENT EUROPEAN IN A SEX SCANDAL!

ABC News: A prominent, 74-year-old Egyptian banker, Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar, was arrested at New York's Pierre Hotel this morning in connection with an alleged sex assault Sunday on a 44-year-old room maid.
The attack allegedly took place when the woman delivered tissues he requested to his room.

The incident recalled allegations against another international finance official at a New York City hotel earlier this month. On May 14, a maid at the Sofitel Hotel claimed, former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexually assaulted her in his Manhattan hotel suite. Strauss-Kahn is under house arrest in New York as his case proceeds.

Omar was arrested on charges of sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, forcible touching and harassment.
Sources said that the executive was clad in pajamas when he answered the door to let the maid in. He then allegedly groped her breasts and tried to kiss her before she fled.

Sources gave ABC this account:

When the maid arrived, he asked her to leave the tissues on a table inside his room. Once she was in the room, he allegedly closed the door and locked it.

Then, he allegedly grabbed her, kissed her, and fondled her breasts and buttocks. She fought him off and, according to sources, she told him she wasn't there for that. He then grabbed her again. This time, sources say, he rubbed up against her and she again resisted him. He then asked for her phone number. She gave him a false number, and he let her out of the room.

"Experienced NYPD detectives found the complainant to be credible," said New York Deputy Police Commissioner for Public Information Paul Browne.

Browne promised "further details" upon Omar's arraignment, and additional comment when asked for more on the arrest or the alleged assault.

Omar now heads El-Mex Salines Co., a solar salt producer in Egypt. He had been chairman of the Bank of Alexandria, sources said.

The Pierre, a luxury, 5-star hotel located at 5th Avenue and 61st Street adjacent to Central Park, released the following statement regarding the arrest: "The Pierre's priority is the safety of our guests and staff. We take all complaints very seriously and investigate thoroughly. This incident has been formally reported to the New York Police Department and is under investigation. We will fully comply with the investigation as requested."

NEW FACES IN THE RACE FOR THE CITY COUNCIL SEAT IN DISTRICT B!

Jerry Davis

Alvin Byrd
The race for the city council seat in district B is getting interesting.  It's the post that will soon be vacated by term limited Jarvis Johnson.

So far the Insite has learned a member from Johnson's staff and the brother of a popular Houston restaurant owner are running for the post.

First, Alvin Byrd.  He's worked in Johnson's office for years as the community liason.

If Johnson can't make an event you'll likely see Byrd there in his place.  The Fifth Ward resident is also out in the community addressing issues like joblessness and illegal dumping.

The second person in the race is Jerry Davis.  He happens to be the brother of Breakfast Klub owner and talk show host Marcus Davis.

Jerry tells the Insite, "the district needs to move in the right direction and I have the tools to collaborate with other council members."

Davis is the operator a youth mentoring program in Houston in addition to his business experience.

I ran into both Davis and Byrd both pressing the flesh with the community at the North Forest ISD Teacher of the Year ceremony last Friday.

District B is sure to be an interesting race!

OPRAH MAKES A KILLING FROM HER FINAL SHOW!

It's guaranteed to be one of the most watched shows in TV history, and if you want to buy a piece of Oprah, it will cost you.
The Oprah Winfrey Show is charging a whopping $1 million for a 30-second commercial on it's big finale show on Wednesday, May 25th.

The $1 million price tag is nearly 18 times more than the show's recent asking price of $57,400, as reported by Nielsen earlier in the season.

While the Superbowl remains the most expensive TV show to advertise on (it cost $3 million for a 30-second spot on the last Superbowl), among regularly-scheduled TV shows, the 2004 series finale of Friends is STILL the most expensive -- it cost $2 million for a 30-second commercial.

After Friends, the Seinfeld finale in 1998 cost $1.4M per 30-second commercial, while the finale for Everybody Loves Raymond in 2005 cost $1.2M per spot.
As for who will be the guests on Oprah's finale show -- she's keeping it a closely guarded secret.

HOUSTON AIRPORT SYSTEM DIRECTOR DEFENDS DECISION TO LAYOFF WORKERS DESPITE EXPANSION!

SOURCES: RICE UNIVERSITY POLICE OFFICER FIRED FOR TRYING TO ASSIST HOUSTON COPS!

Rice University Office David Sedmak - Photo courtesy LinkedIn
The Insite has learned a Rice University police officer has been fired after reportedly trying to help his fellow brothers in blue.

That officer has been identified as David Sedmak.

It was back on May 7th when two Houston police officers found themselves in a shootout with a suspect at the downtown Greyhound bus station.

After one of the HPD cops was shot another officer got on the police radio and called for back up.

Sources tell the Insite Rice University police officer David Sedmak was on duty near the school and decided to respond and drove to the scene downtown.

We now know two Houston cops were shot but survived.  The gunman, according to the police department, took his own life.

So what happened to officer Sedmak after the incident that lead every newscast in town?  He was fired by the Rice University Police Department.

Members of the Houston Police Officers' Union are outraged at Rice's action.  Ray Hunt is the vice president of the police officers' union.  He says, "if Rice officers are in trouble we'll respond with back up and I'd expect their officers to do the same."

Hunt says what officer Sedmak did is an example of what Mayor Annise Parker called for when she ran for office back in 2009.  It was during the campaign when Parker indicated she wanted law enforcement officers in the Houston area to work together because of a shortage of HPD officers.

Some say it appears Rice may not be interested in that citywide collaboration when it comes to officers backing up their brothers in blue.

The school issued this statement to the Insite:

"As a matter of policy, Rice University does not comment on personnel matters.  However, out of respect for the Houston Police Department, we want to clarify that David Sedmak was terminated from the Rice University Police Department for dereliction of duty. Sedmak left his post when only two other officers were on duty and failed to notify his supervisor of his whereabouts for nearly an hour, which could have endangered the safety of our students and campus."

UPDATE: Rice spokesman B.J. Almond sent the Insite an email insisting Officer Sedmak was fired for leaving his post and not assisting HPD cops.

Almond also says the record reflects there is cooperation between the Rice Police Department and HPD.

HOUSTON TALK SHOW HOST MICHAEL BERRY EXPANDING HIS AUDIENCE!

Michael Berry from his Houston, Tx studio!
It's like watching quiet success as it happens.  That's how I describe watching Houston talk show host Michael Berry as he picks up more radio stations across the country. We all know he's on the air on at least two radio stations right here in Houston.  But did you know he's gone nationwide or at least almost nationwide.  Berry's controversial approach to political and social issues can now be heard in several cities outside of Houston.  The one I'm most excited about is Berry's arrival on my hometown radio station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  His show is now airing from 5 pm to 8 pm on WJBO AM.  Berry can also be heard on stations in San Antonio and Portland, Oregon.  Way to go Berry!

Next is a 112-mile bike course that will take participants west through the scenic, rolling farmland of east Texas. The day ends with a 26.2-mile run course entirely within The Woodlands that concludes with a spectacular finish on Market Street. HPD OFFICERS UPSET ABOUT WORKING THE ART CAR PARADE!

Some Houston Police officers are crying foul after being told they have to work the Art Car Parade this weekend.

Those officers told FOX 26 they've been told by their supervisor they will not be paid overtime for working the event. Instead the officers must take off a day next week.

Officers say that takes them off the streets from fighting real crime.

How is the department responding?

They issued this statement:
"Whether officers are compensated for overtime in the form of pay or other compensation is a longstanding management decision."

Union officials tell FOX 26 this could become a problem if the department abuses the time off policy rather than paying officers overtime.

YOU CAN'T REPOSSESS EVERYONE'S CAR!

A grand jury will need to determine whether or not charges will be filed against a man who police say shot a tow truck driver who was repossessing his vehicle.

The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. Friday at the SunBlossom at Woodlake apartment complex on South Gessner Road.

The tow truck driver had already hooked the reposessed vehicle onto the wrecker truck when police say he was shot once by the owner of the repossessed vehicle.

After the tow truck driver was shot, he drove away from the apartment complex to a nearby Exxon fuel station on South Gessner Road near Westheimer Road. He sought help once he arrived at the Exxon station.

When Houston police arrived to the Exxon station, the tow truck driver was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
The shooting suspect fled from the apartment complex but Houston police have identified him and knows where he lives, so homicide investigators say the case will be referred to a grand jury.

Raz B of B2K
Source: Hip Hop Gossip

Former B2Ker Raz B is at the center of another bizarre controversy. The singer, who previously claimed that he was molested by his former manager Chris Stokes and mentor, fellow R&B singer Marques Houston, is now being accused of having illicit relations with a 15 year old boy in China.

According to Bossip, an investigation began on 3-12-2011 involved the teenage boy, who alleged the singer had the teen engage willingly and unwillingly in sexual acts. The 19 page affidavit claims the 25 year old singer engaged in numerous sex acts included sodomy and Urolagnia--which involves urination.

The legal age of consent in China is 14, and there have been no official statements released regarding these charges. Several sources have indicated that it may have been Stokes who anonymously leaked the information to the media.

HPD INVESTIGATORS WANT HIM FOR A 2005 RAPE - HAVE YOU SEEN HIM?

Mabiael Valenzuela
Houston police are asking for the public's assistance in locating a suspect wanted in a March 2005 attempted sexual assault case involving an adult female and a six-year-old female that occurred in southwest Houston.

The suspect, Mabiael Valenzuela (H/m, DOB: 9-9-82), is charged with attempted sexual assault and indeceny with a child in the 178th State District Court. He is about 5 feet 5 inches tall, 180 pounds, with brown eyes and a medium complexion. He has dark brown/black hair, last seen in a ponytail, and a thin mustache. A photo of suspect Velenzuela, who remains at large, is attached to this news release.

On March 4, 2005, the female victim, 30, was taking care of her eight-month-old infant and babysitting a five-year-old male and a six-year-old female at an apartment in the 9200 block of Bellwood. The victim then heard a window break and Valenzuela, armed with a kitchen knife, entered the living room. Valenzuela threatened everyone and forced them at knifepoint into the bedroom. The suspect then tied up everyone and began to inappropriately touch the six-year-old before throwing her into the closet. Valenzuela then threw the five-year-old and the infant onto the side of the bed and attempted to sexually assault the adult female before stealing the contents of her purse. An investigation was initiated, however, all leads were exhausted at that time.

In February 2011, the case was reopened and evidence collected from the scene developed information that identified Valenzuela as the suspect in this case. On Tuesday (May 17) a warrant was issued for his arrest. Valenzuela was last seen in the Richmond and Gessner area about six months ago.

Anyone with information in this case or on the whereabouts of Mabiael Valenzuela is urged to contact the HPD Juvenile Division at 713-531-5335.

Just spoke with TSU investigators who have informed me that the investigation has revealed that the producer of the tape was not a currently enrolled student at TSU.

The other two participants were freshmen students. The female is not a minor. Upon learning that participants were TSU students, the university moved quickly and has placed the students on interim disciplinary suspension, pending the outcome of the full investigation.

ELDERLY VICTIM LEFT TIED UP FOR TWO DAYS AFTER BURGLARY!

Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) investigators have arrested two suspects accused of burglarizing a home and leaving the elderly homeowner bound with tape and wrapped in a blanket for two days.

On May 3, 2011 about 6 p.m. two men forced their way into the home near Highway 6 and Highway 290 in northwest Harris County. They tied the 76-year-old homeowner with duct tape and wrapped him in a blanket on the floor of his bedroom while they ransacked the home for a couple of hours.

The suspects stole numerous items from the residence including guns, the homeowner’s vehicle, trailer, and riding lawn mower. The homeowner, unable to free himself or call for help, spent the night tied up on his bedroom floor.

The next day the suspects returned and spent about 2 hours cleaning the house, trying to get rid of evidence, with the victim still restrained in the bedroom. On the morning of May 5, the 76-year-old victim thought he was going to die and decided to seek help.

He somehow managed to roll out his back door, down a 100-foot driveway, and down to the road. He lay there until a passing motorist stopped and freed him. The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment. On May 16, HCSO deputies arrested two suspects in connection to the case.

They are identified as Erick Carranza and Junior Verlasquez. Both are charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful restraint-serious bodily injury.

32 year old Noe Morin made an appearance in Harris County court Wednesday but a judge refused to release him on bond.

Morin, who's being held in the Harris County Jail, is accused of using a chainsaw to cut off the head of his long time friend and roommate 35 year old Marlon Thomas.

It happened this weekend in the Fifth Ward house the two shared.

Investigators say Morin asked a neighbor to help him fix a chainsaw. That neighbor then said Morin later took him to to see the head of his roommate.

According Harris County court records Morin reportedly said that's what happens to people who steal from him.

Council Member Rodriguez Statement on Adopted City Council Redistricting Plan!

James Rodriguez
This morning the Houston City Council adopted a revised redistricting plan that incorporates the recommendations submitted by the Latino leadership on April 20.
The proposal provides an opportunity for the Latino community to gain representation on the Houston City Council.
I am proud that my office provided the leadership on this issue throughout this process.
I want to thank the Mayor and her staff for working with the Latino community leadership on this critical issue.
I want to thank the Latino leadership for stepping forward and making the case for a redistricting plan that is fair to all communities.
I also want to thank Dr. Laura Murillo and the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for facilitating the Latino leadership effort during the past month and a half!

WHY WON'T HOUSTON VISITORS SHOW BEYONCE' ANY LOVE?

I was in the city of Houston's official Visitors Center this week and noticed a pretty neat display in the store that featured a hometown girl we're all proud of.

Behind a security glass there were several awards won by none other than Beyonce' and Destiny's Child during their musical journey.

From MTV's moon man to the gold World Music Award trophy.

There are also several Beyonce' t-shirts and souvenir books for sale around the display.

I was curious so I asked the clerk how long will the display be in the visitor's shop.  I was shocked at what she told me.

First, she said it will likely be in the shop another three months.  That would end end a five month run of the awards' display and the Beyonce' memorabilia.

But what was shocking - that clerk says in the last two months the store hasn't sold a single Bey item.  Not one.

The worker says no one wants to buy a t-shirt or a souvenir book for $10 each.

That employee of the visitor's center is so desperate to move the product she told me to tell people to say they read about it and they could get half off on the Beyonce' products.

I'm not sure if she was serious but why not try it out.

You'd pay $5 for a Beyone' t-shirt right?
